Question:  Are there any churches locally that teach that in order to walk with Christ one must lay down his life and be fully submitted to the Holy spirit leading to overcome. That is open to the possibility that spiritual gifts are real and that salvation is a walk< not that we earn anything , just that we progress from salvation into sanctification and beyond this to be used by God for whatever purpose he has for us?  (Submitted by: J.W.A - Decatur, IN)

Response from Pastor Rick Taylor, New Haven UMC:
JWA,

When I married my wife I believed that I loved her with my whole heart...and I did. What I did not realize at that time was how much that love would grow over the 30 years we have been married. I look back now on the "love"

which served as the basis for our wedding commitment and I think how small that love seems in comparison to the love I have for my wife now.

When you make a commitment to Jesus to believe in him, to follow him, to give your heart to him you believe at that moment you are giving everything to Jesus. When you have walked with Jesus with the guidance and nuturing of the Holy Spirit you discover that you have a greater capacity within you to embrace Jesus and serve him. Spiritual gifts that you were unaware of are revealed as your love for Jesus matures. These Spiritual gifts are to be used to serve Jesus in helping people to experience God's love and connect with God through Jesus.

Response from Rev Frank Sitcler, MATS of First Assembly of God
Dear JWA,

Your answer is YES.

But for each seeker of God and for each individual that is following Jesus the test is how to respond in life's challenges. We not only submitted to God the Holy Spirit but also are in a living and growing relationship with Him. Then we can hear and know when we are to reach out for his help and how to respond to his voice. Being deeply connected in the Body of Jesus Christ with other Christ makes us receptive to God's voice. Having at least one other person who can speak to us frankly and even confront us can lead to a richer (sanctified) life.

I trust you will find such a church and be blessed there by God and his people.
