Question:
I'm currently looking for a church, until then i've been saving my tithes because I've heard different opinions on what is the appropriate way to tithe when you don't have a church home. Is it permissable to send it to a charity or is that only for giving over your tithe? How about giving my tithe to help people in need?

LC - First, it's apparent from your question that your heart is in the right place, You desire to give out of the way you have been blessed to be a blessing, and you want to do what you believe God's will is for you to do. To me this is the main point. We are to be cheerful givers, not giving out of coercion, force, obligation, duty or rules.

You're right, there are different opinions on how, when and where we should give. I think we can get too legalistic in how we approach this when giving is more of a spiritual matter. I'm not sure there is a "right" answer to the question so I would ask you; where is God leading you in this? Do you sense the Spirit prompting you to give to a specific charity or to help out someone in need? If so, go for it.

You don't need permission from anyone in how you choose to give in God's name. Give freely and with an attitude of love and gratefulness that God has put you in a position to share of your wealth. Good luck in finding a church home where you can support the work there.

Grace & Peace to you! Don
